NEW MOON – set intentions
The moon is such a powerful presence in our lives, pulling on the oceans tides and creating a rhythm of life for all of us.
A new moon is the perfect time for reflection and intention setting. She brings with her the opportunity to explore creativity as she is dark and “empty” – fertile ground for new seeds of intention.
This ritual is simple, easy and most of all effective. If the weather is nice, it’s preferable to be outside.
Pick a time
Pick a time when you can be alone and undisturbed for about 20 minutes.
Set up the space
Preferably outside where you can be alone. Light some candles, bring a notebook and a pen and a Glass of water. I love to bring a cozy blanket especially when it’s cold outside and some tea nearby. You can also light a fire if you are in a safe environment.
Burn rosemary, mugwort, a bay leaf or your favorite herb to cleanse the space. Light you smude stick (or loose herbs), blow it out and invite the smoke to envelop your body from your feet to your head. If doing this inside make sure the window is open. You can also use an essential oil spray for the same purpose.
Close your eyes and breathe, letting thoughts come and go and just sit with yourself for a few minutes. Start to envision the dark sky and how you might like to grow with the moon over the next month.
Ask & write it out
- What are your intentions for the next 29 days? There are no wrong answers here. Whatever it is, make sure it’s about you.
- How am I feeling right now?
- What feels exciting for me now?
- What feels blocked?
- What am I most yearning for at this moment?
- What do I need most in this phase in my life?
- Who or what do I wish to release?
- Who or what do I wish to invite to my life?
Write it down. Writing, is magic on its own. Make sure to use pen and paper. It helps our brains process things differently than just thinking alone.
Close our eyes and focus on your breath. Recite your intentions. Notice how it feels in your body. Imagine how it will feel once whatever you put out into the world comes back to you. See it as already having happened
Continue to sit quietly, focusing on your intention and the feeling it will bring you. After a few minutes gently open your eyes.
From there, you can set an intention for the month ahead based on how you’re feeling and any major thoughts you’ve had. Don’t worry if nothing is clearly coming up for you during this ritual. That’s okay too.
Close the ritual
Ground down and let go. Sit for a while longer and enjoy your favorite cup of tea while slowly closing the ritual by blowing out the candle and giving thanks to mother nature.
